Wildflower meadow and pond
Over the course of the last few years a team of volunteers at the allotment have been working on making the most of some of the unused land at the allotment. Due to a history of flooding, we had a small area that couldn’t be rented out to plot holders and had become overgrown.
Volunteers from the allotment have converted this unusable land into a wildflower meadow and pond area, designed to attract wildlife to the allotments as well as to provide a communal space for our plot holders to meet up or take a break.
The project started in October 2022, with a full clear up and levelling of the land. Later that year we successfully applied for a grant from the Cardiff Council Biodiversity team. They supplied us with wildflower seeds, bug and bee hotels, bird boxes and the all-important liner for the pond.

Over the course of the last year our volunteers have done a superb job in making the space a real haven for wildlife in our small corner of Cardiff. That said, there is always a bit more that can be done and we’d love for plot holders interested in the project to come along and get involved.
This might include helping to build some seating areas, weaving branches or looking after the pond. If you have any ideas of how we can add to the meadow, please just let us know.
